The ELT Freelancers' Community Awayday

It was the first time I've attended and I was so impressed. It was fantastically organised, great talks, great food (very important!), very lovely attendees and very welcoming organisers.

Who is the day aimed at?

Sessions are aimed mainly at freelance ELT editors and proofreaders. However, in previous years a number of people with other related roles (e.g. authors, designers, media researchers, permissions consultants, etc) have attended and reported that they found the day useful.

Publishers' Awayday Ticket

We have found that representatives of publishing houses and other organisations are increasingly keen to attend the Awayday. As a result we have now introduced a separate Publishers' Awayday Ticket. Please note the following:

  • We welcome in-house representatives to the day, but we kindly ask that each organisation limits themselves to a maximum of two representatives.

  • Publishers are not permitted to attend the National Geographic Learning presentation. Instead, Publishers are invited to attend a separate focus group during that session.

Pre-conference dinner: Thursday 23 January

As in previous years, there is an optional pre-conference dinner for freelancers the evening before the Awayday. This will be held in a private dining room at the Oxford Spires Hotel. The meal requires a separate ticket and is also open to those not attending the Awayday.

Three courses with tea or coffee: £32.50

Optional drink in the bar 7pm, seated at 7.30pm.

View the menu here. We will keep a record of your dish choices for you to refer to on the evening.

The venue

The 2020 Awayday will take place at the Oxford Spires Hotel, just over a mile from Oxford train station. This recently refurbished venue offers:

  • excellent conference facilities

  • ample free parking (note that you must register your car at the reception desk)

  • free superfast wi-fi

  • delegates receive a discounted flexible B&B room rate of £105 (can be cancelled up to midday of the day of check in) which includes access to the pool, steam room, sauna and gym. Call 01865 324324 before 16th December and quote the ELT Freelancers' Awayday. (Note that more competitive rates, albeit with less flexibility, can often be found through other online agents.)

📣 NEW FOR 2020! 'Bring and swap' table

We are hosting a 'bring and swap' table, where we invite you to exchange and re-use unwanted items such as ELT reference books or smaller pieces of office equipment such as computer mice, webcams, keyboards, wrist rests, USB memory sticks, etc. It may be useful to clearly label some equipment items, or package them with their instruction booklet or cables.

We would like to thank National Geographic Learning for sponsoring the drinks reception at this Awayday.

This event has been organised with reference to the Sustainability guidelines for conference organisers document which has been circulated by ELT Footprint. Find out more here
